Power interruptions are one of the most predictable disruptions a business will deal with — which also makes them one of the most solvable, if the backup power setup is sized and installed correctly. Undersized or poorly planned systems are the most common reason businesses feel like they're "still" losing productivity to outages despite having backup power in place.

Start by separating critical from non-critical loads

Not everything needs to stay powered during an outage. POS terminals, networking equipment, and a handful of lights are usually critical; air conditioning and non-essential equipment usually aren't. Sizing a backup system around everything in the building is expensive and often unnecessary — sizing it around what actually needs to keep running is the more practical starting point.

Match runtime to your actual outage pattern

A UPS designed to bridge a brief interruption is a very different product from an inverter system designed to carry a location through hours without grid power. Buying the wrong category of backup power for your actual outage pattern is the most common mismatch we see — it's worth being specific about typical outage duration before choosing equipment.

Don't overlook surge protection

Power that returns after an outage often arrives with voltage spikes. Automatic voltage regulation and surge protection on backup equipment protects the same devices you're trying to keep running — without it, the equipment you protected during the outage can be damaged the moment power comes back.

Networking equipment needs power too

It's easy to plan backup power for tills and lighting and forget the router, switch, and access points that everything else depends on. A POS terminal with battery backup is still offline if the network switch it talks to loses power.

Maintenance matters as much as installation

Backup power systems degrade if they're never tested. A battery that hasn't been checked in over a year is a common reason "backup power" fails exactly when it's needed. Periodic testing and battery health checks should be part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Getting backup power right is mostly a sizing and planning exercise, not a hardware problem — an assessment of your actual critical loads is the most useful first step before ordering equipment.
